In Order to secure
the shipping of your vehicle, most auto transport
companies will require that you do some
preparation in advance before shipping. Here are a
few quick tips!
Most auto transport companies will not allow you
to carrier more than 100 lbs of personal
belongings in the vehicle during shipping, and it
more than likely has to be in the trunk. The
insurance company will not cover personal items
inside the vehicle if lost or stolen. Remember !
the Vehicle transportation carrier is open and
exposed while parking in a truck stop on the high
way.
You should also make sure you inspect your vehicle
at the same time with the shipping company. All
exterior and interior defects should be noted on
the entire car shipping documents. If no
inspection is done, then the auto transport
company probably won't be liable for any of these
damages. Also, when you pick up your vehicle at
your destination, you should also perform another
inspection, and note any damages on the shipping
paperwork prior to departure. The transport
company should also wash off your vehicle so that
you can do a proper inspection of the vehicle. Do
not pick up your car if you are in a rush, this
may cost you thousand of dollars in repairs that
were not noted before you left the presence of the
auto transporter!
Make sure that you vehicle is personally insured
because; whatever they, the car shipper, may not
cover, the balance can be covered by your personal
insurance. For example, if your vehicle were
struck while sitting on a lot, even under the
control of the car carrier, your insurance would
cover the damages. If the vehicle were damaged
directly by the car carrier, then the car carrier
would be responsible. Be aware that most, if not
all auto transport companies will not repair
damages due to normal road conditions.
There is an extra charge if your vehicle is
inoperable. The additions to your vehicle such as
camper shells, lifted/oversized trucks, and other
things that you did not tell the company prior to
shipping, will also add an extra charge to your
cost. Make sure you advise the auto shipper of any
and all modifications to your vehicle for a proper
quote.
Make sure you have a complete set of keys for the
transport company, and an extra set for yourself.
Make sure you have your vehicle serviced and the
gas tank low (not empty) prior to transport for
safty measures. Finally, if you are transporting a
classic, custom, rare, exotic, or otherwise
expensive vehicle, go for the enclosed transport
if you can... it is certainly worth the extra
cost!
